Commercial air transport has existed for decades, expanding despite various crises and showing long-term resilience. The future growth of air transport will likely depend on sustained world economic and trade growth, as well as declining airline costs and ticket prices. Other factors, such as regulatory regimes, technological improvements and fuel costs will also impact future growth.(Source: ICAO reporting forms, ICAO estimates).............................................................................................................................................................................REVENUE PASSENGER-KILOMETRES (RPK) AND FREIGHT TONNES-KILOMETRES (FTK) EVOLUTION SINCE 1944ICAO WORLD CIVIL AVIATION REPORTINTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANIZATION.....................................................................................................................................................................23.............................................................................................................................................................................KEY FIGURESRPK +7.1%FTK +1.7%ASK +6.2%LF 80.4% +0.7 pts2015(versus 2014)World Air Carrier DataThe data shown above represents the worldwide traffic carried by the air carriers registered in the countries of each Region. The trend over time has been for air transport to grow at a somewhat faster pace than surface transport, thus the share of air transport is gradually increasing.TOURISM HIGHLIGHTS: MOST TRAVEL BY AIR FOR LEISURE PURPOSES(Source: UNWTO)In 2014, travel for holidays, recreation and other forms of leisure accounted for just over half of all international tourist arrivals (53% or 598 million). Some 14% of international tourists reported travelling for business and professional purposes, and another 27% travelled for other reasons such as visiting friends and relatives (VFR), religious reasons and pilgrimages, health treatment, etc. The purpose of visit for the remaining 6% of arrivals was not specified.ICAO WORLD CIVIL AVIATION REPORTINTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANIZATION.....................................................................................................................................................................25.............................................................................................................................................................................WorldPASSENGER TRAFFICRevenue Passenger-Kilometres – RPKAvailable Seat-Kilometres – ASKPassenger Load Factor – LF(Source: ICAO Form A and ICAO estimates)Passenger Traffic AchievedAir carriers recorded a higher annual RPK growth of +7.1% in 2015, as compared to the RPK growth of +6.0% in 2014.
