Quick java break before resuming with the last panel of #icaoNGAP! Back in half an hour.

28 November, 14:37

Yesterday, one of our speakers asked the audience to define who the next generation of aviation professionals are–are they high school students? College graduates? What about experienced professionals who wish to change career paths?

Darius Lim, Acting Director (Aviation Industry), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, touches on that question in his presentations. He says there’s been a focus on millennials, but Singapore is also looking at how to lower the barriers for mid-career entries into the aviation industry. They do this through aviation  learning journeys, open houses and more.

28 November, 14:11

Thobile Masooa, Executive Human Resources, South African Civil Aviation Authority:

The skills shortage is no longer a looming threat, it is a stark reality that many countries are facing. Rapid growth and change is reshaping the aviation industry. At the moment the aviation industyy is dominated by a generations of individuals over the age of 40, and there is an imbalance in terms of gender representation, the aviation industry is still dominated by men across the world.

28 November, 13:56

Margareth Josephath Kyarwenda of AATO: We need to address the needs of the next generation of aviation professionals by promoting the industry, creating awareness, providing mentoring and coaching opportunities. #icaoNGAP https://t.co/V3eNdAmI0T pic.twitter.com/T7jNwgALXI

28 November, 13:40

So upon returning from lunch I discovered that my message about going to lunch never posted, which is fun. In any case, we are back for the last part of #icaoNGAP and on stage we have:

  • Mary Nelson, Division Manager, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy, United States and Chair NGAP Implementation Working Group
  • Hesham Al Tenaiji , Manager ANSP Training, General Civil Aviation Authority, United Arab Emirates
  • Margareth Josephath Kyarwenda, Secretary General, Association of African Aviation Training Organizations, Ethiopia
  • Darius Lim, Acting Director (Aviation Industry), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore
  • Thobile Masooa, Executive Human Resources, South African Civil Aviation Authority

28 November, 11:55

Dr. Carmen Sicilia, Associate Dean, McGill University School of Continuing Studies, Canada, is talking about what strategies are to be developed by stakeholders and industry to encourage, engage and prepare current and future young professionals.

She puts emphasis on moving away from transactional exchanges with young professionals, and move towards a relationship-building. It is important to do this at various stages: with youth who are beginning to think about their jobs, when they are about to make college/university choices, when they are in college/university, when they are ready to look for employment.

28 November, 11:39

Dr. Gary Northam, President of @AABIntl : there's a lot in the aviation field that moves very quickly from a technological perspective, and we need to be able to move with it. #icaoNGAP https://t.co/V3eNdAmI0T pic.twitter.com/aH4283WvUM

28 November, 11:31

Meshesha Belayneh, Chief, Global Aviation Training Office (GAT), ICAO, is speaking of recent transformations in education, and the necessity for what he calls a “trilateral cooperation.”

A trilateral cooperation consists of States, academia and industry all working together to enhance the accessibility of education through relevance, innovations and affordability. He gives the following example:

Academia can integrate new technologies and delivery methods based on industry best practices (online distance learning, massive/hybrid open online courses, etc). Industry, in turn, can sponsor technology/tools to support accessibility to these. States can also collaborate and recognize innovative academic programmes.

28 November, 11:24

M. Belayneh of @icao: academia should consult State aviation growth projections and industry HR plans to determine which aviation programmes should be prioritized and developed. https://t.co/V3eNdAmI0T #icaoNGAP

28 November, 10:15

Alright,  it’s time for a coffee break. The live blog will resume in 45 minutes!

28 November, 10:07

Interesting parallel happening in this panel. On the one hand, presenters are speaking of the different ways that young professionals learn. Often, these ways are interactive, they are short bursts of information and rely on innovative technologies.

On the other hand, the second half of the presenters are speaking of learning techniques for an older generation of aviation professionals that still pursue training opportunities. This generation tends to steer clear of the bells and whistles, and prefer a more traditional way of learning with less technology involved.

28 November, 9:52

I LOVE that this panel of the #icaoNGAP is focused on adapting to new learning needs and techniques. It's no longer a one-size-fits-all when it comes to training and teaching, it's about innovating and personalizing. Incredible. https://t.co/V3eNdAmI0T pic.twitter.com/ynwNHToKSl

— Lisa Williams (@lwilliamsICAO) November 28, 2017

28 November, 9:41

Kelly de Lambert, Training Centre Manager, Airways New Zealand Training Centre, New Zealand, is talking new trending strategies in innovation for an evolving demographic. She says the new way of learning requires flexibility and something more cost effective,  people want something when they want it and they are seeking new learning tools that provide that flexibility.

To respond to this growing need, the Airways New Zealand Training Centre uses AIRBOOKS, a cloud-based interactive elearning tool that caters to a new generation of learners. It includes formative assessments with instant feedback. The content is dynamic, mobile-friendly and up to date.

28 November, 9:29

Lori Brown, Associate Professor, Western Michigan University, United States and Chair NGAP Outreach Working Group, is explaining what “mixed reality” is:

Mixed reality allows us to mix our digital world with our real world, as opposed to virtual reality which is just digital. I use this in my labs, we’re able to bring aviation components into the classroom that usually wouldn’t fit. Aircraft models and interactive cockpits, I can bring them live into the classroom. Students can do a full walk around and examine it.”

Mixed reality can be used for maintenance training, cabin training, creating virtual laboratoires, practice procedures, pilot training. In fact, Lori says it can even be used by two people across the world from each other and be seeing the same visuals, which is very useful for teaching. The instructor and the student can see the exact same things.

27 November, 17:21

Anna Falth, Manager, Special Programmes, United Nations Women (UN WOMEN), is presenting on the changing world of work. I’ve been waiting all day for this particular presentation, and it doesn’t disappoint. Some of the statistics and numbers are a bit jarring, but the underlying message here is that we are moving forward; and we need to continue to do so.

Some takeaways from her presentation that hit me hard:

  • The gender pay gap is 16.7% less per hour
  • Women’s representation on boards from 2003-2016 increased from 8.5% to 23%
  • In general, girls lack access to secondary education, particularly to quality STEM programmes
  • Girls start to self-select out of STEM starting in middle school and their sense of self-efficacy goes down even when they perform as well, or better, than their male counterparts
  • Women continue to drop out of STEM disciplines in disproportionate numbers during their higher education studies

27 November, 17:08

Arielle Meloul-Wechsler, Senior Vice President, People and Culture, Air Canada, Canada is talking to us about what their approach to young professionals: agile engagement. What does the next generation want? They approach it through:

  • Transparency: tempo of communication, and giving employees the information first
  • Holacracy and talent: variety, room to innovate, comfort with ambiguity
  • Socialized development: unique programs, flexible opportunities
  • Awareness: leaders who are self aware and less introverted
  • Diversity and inclusion: sense of belonging and identity

27 November, 16:48

Alejandra Cruz Ross, Transport Officer, Sectoral Policies, International Labour Organization(ILO), is presenting on the  decent work for the civil aviation sector. 27 November, 14:21

Mitchell Lichocki, Electrical Engineering Student, Concordia University, Canada, details what he thinks the 4 pillars of the aerospace industry are:

  1. Student initiatives: networking, international experiences, student associations
  2. Educational institute initiatives: encourage student creativity, industry involvement and observe what students want (communications, student panels)
  3. Industry intiatives: student development, motivation, challenge them. Provide internships, industry showcases, case studies and research
  4. Government initiatives: promote experiential learning by providing subsidies for internships and research grants, promote international opportunities through work/study exchanges and international events.

27 November, 14:09

Andrew Osinski and Jenna Lee, both Honours Science and Aviation, Earth Science Specialization students, University of Waterloo, Canada,  say they chose aviation because of their desire for travel and adventure, for new cultures and experiences.

They conducted a study at the University of Waterloo, and discovered that 5 years after graduation, 88.9% of students wanted to be working for a regional or major airline, 2.5% wanted to work in military aviation, and 8.6% wanted to work in specialty service.

27 November, 11:28

Wow. According to young aviation professional Kleopas Bintoroyakti, more than 65,000 people in Indonesia work in aviation, with more than 10,000 pilots (two of which are his dad and brother!) #icaoNGAP https://t.co/V3eNdAmI0T pic.twitter.com/mPUiwVfGyY

— Lisa Williams (@lwilliamsICAO) November 27, 2017

27 November, 11:16

Jeeyoon Jung, Young Aviation Professional Officer (YAPP), made us laugh with her perspective as both an outsider and an insider. She says she is not from the aviation world and still doesn’t “speak the language,”  but NGAP is also about reaching out to people who possess skills that are valuable to the world of aviation. She has degrees in electrical engineering, management science and public management and governance. She’s interested in technology and innovation-driven climate change & sustainable development, and is further establishing her career by working on environment sustainable goals with various aviation companies.

27 November, 9:43

Marie-Paule Roudil, Director of UNESCO Liaison Office in New York and Representative of UNESCO to the United Nations, references Agenda 2030:

We will continue to explore ways in which the aviation communities and sections can work together to engage youth. We have to find new ways of working together to be able to achieve these new sustainable goals, and in  looking at goal #9 particularly,  we will have to rethink how we use science, technology, engineering and innovation for the benefits of people and the planet. One of the challenges is the persistent representation of youths and young women in engineering, as traditionally it has been viewed at a typically male-dominated domain.

27 November, 9:28

In her opening remarks, ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu highlights the need to inspire and engage youth, particularly young women and girls, to ensure the future success of aviation. She references Shaesta Waiz and her Dreams Soar journey; Shaesta is one of our speakers this afternoon and after following her journey for months, I can’t wait to hear her speak.
