This year ICAO is celebrating its 75th Anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. We are inspired by the past achievements that have made air transport a safe, secure and efficient mode of travel, and we are collectively aware of the increasing pace of innovation throughout the aviation industry, and the great potential that it holds.
In September we will host an Innovation Fair to educate this sector on the possibilities that innovation presents, and to provide insights to key decision-makers, on how they can start-up innovation within their own States. One of the aspects of modern innovation involves the relatively low development costs that make it truly accessible to all States. To ensure No Country is Left Behind; leaders in innovation must include those from developing and emerging aviation markets.

Pointing to the rapid technological changes in the aviation industry, including the implementation of artificial intelligence, drones, and blockchain, ICAO Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu recently stressed the need for aviation training that will support “a bold new generation with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.”
She delivered this call through her keynote addressed at Hanseo University’s International Aviation Conference, which was organized in cooperation with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
“In the field of civil aviation training, it is critical that we identify the appropriate intelligence that will allow us to rapidly provide optimal aviation training solutions that meet the demands of growth,” Dr. Liu declared. “The key is to integrate the decision-useful information, from multiple disciplines, into training organizations in a coherent and functional way.”
The Secretary General explained that ICAO had learned from the reform of its own training, noting that the “convergent approach” had become critical to the evolution of training strategies and solutions. “We have noted over the years that by collecting and leveraging a wide range of inputs, from a variety of sources, we can best realize training outcomes which truly meet the needs of the industry,” she said.
Dr. Liu’s remarks formed the basis of bilateral discussions she subsequently had with the Minister of Transport, Ms. Kim Hyun-mee, and the President of Hanseo University, Dr. Kee Sun Ham.
