How do Bombardier’s C Series aircraft minimize the airliners’ impact on the environment?

A key player in the aviation industry, Bombardier is leading an important path with new solutions aimed at reducing its global environmental footprint. Its product innovation life-cycle process – from the design and manufacture of the aircraft to its end-of-life – was applied throughout the development of the C Series family of aircraft to minimize the airliners’ impact on the environment. On September 26th, at the ICAO hosted 2016 World Aviation Forum, Bombardier announced the Environmental Product Declaration for its CS100 aircraft – the first EPD® (Environment Product Declaration) for the aviation industry

 

The EPD® summarizes and communicates credible and comparable information about the environmental impact of a product at each phase of its lifecycle. EPDs® are verified by a third party expert in accordance with ISO 14025, ISO 14040 and the Product Category Rules (PCR). With the CS100 EPD®, operators of the aircraft will have access to a credible and comparable source of information on the environmental performance of their aircraft and leet.

For Bombardier, the Life Cycle Assessment required for an EPD® brings a better understanding of the environmental impact of design and manufacturing decisions, a step that could, as an example, potentially lead to changes in materials or processes.
